Thanked: 481Last time I looked for hones on Ebay was probably 9 months ago when I lucked up on the lot of translucent arkies with a fairly well worn diamond plate. So it's been a while. I wouldn't say he was selling common rock or concrete, but at least half of his bunch looked like coarse or mid grade hones at best, and they certainly weren't what he suggested they were.

To my eyes
Every time I see a "Grit" number applied to a natural stone my BS detector goes off
Every time I see a "New" country named for a hone my BS detector goes off
On a good note at least they are being up front about it being Slate unlike so may others that make up new names

Thanked: 15I asked the question so not "advertised". If it was $100 I'd steer clear but for $10? $20? Might be worth a try. Are slates... more for tools. IYO?

Thanked: 13226No
I have some of the Welsh slates and they are fine for razors I have used other Slates that have "Erroneous" names and they work okay too
For $10-$20 I would try it too I did with the Welsh ones when they were that price ...
Worse possible outcome is you have a great Knife/Tool hone

Thanked: 481Have they gone up? That's all I paid for mine, unless you include the international shipping. Almost paid as much for that as I did the 3 set of rocks.
Edit:
Man...you'd think by now I would know better than to read about hones then venture over to ebay. ZY 'fine' razor hone model #3000, 7x2.75" 20 bucks, free shipping inbound. Hope it's at least as good as my PHIG LOLLast edited by Marshal; 12-10-2016 at 06:19 AM.

Thanked: 481Yeah, that's why I said earlier you've got to be on your toes shopping Ebay. I paid $25 for my Guangxi, and while I admit it is a damn good rock, I wouldn't say it's in the same ballpark as a Surgical Black/Translucent Arkie and certainly shouldn't be going for Thuringian money. If you could be assured to obtain a good one I'd say easily worth twice the $40 Woodcraft charges for them.
It's one thing to take a gamble on an unknown rock - I've done it a few times and come out on top. Matter of fact that's how I came into a bunch of Translucent Arkies. Seller didn't know what he had and I guess just wanted them gone, I had a hunch but wasn't %100 sure until I had them in hand. I still haven't completely flattened/surfaced the 12" x 3" those SOBs are HARD.
It's quite another to get caught up by buzzwords and hoodwinked. "12K Grit! Priced to sell! Best in town/world!" And there's probably someone out there that's got a little more money than information that will end up purchasing them too.
