Thanked: 55CCS 8000 grit atg?
When we talk about getting a CCS at 8000 grit before moving onto other finishers, are we including an against the grain pass? Have always finished on a coti so far, but I've been thinking that I should try to shave straight from my Fuji in the interests of improving my honing.

Thanked: 55Close comfortable shave. Got the 8k Fuji more to cut down down on coti finishing strokes/time after 3k Naniwa pro. Been thinking I should try to gauge my honing better recently. Started with cotis, get decent edges, but think could be better. Recently figured out one reason for the amount of time necessary on coti was slurry dulling from 3k, was using dmt to flatten before each use and not cleaning the surface well enough. If i can perfect my up to 8k synthetic edges before playing with coti finishing, I think my honing will be much improved 😀.

Thanked: 13249I don't know the Fuji hone
That recommendation was made about the Norton 8k it also applies to the NaniwaSS for sure, also the Shapton GS 8k is pretty good
So you are using a hone that many of us can't say for sure what the outcome should be, first off, secondly the question you have to ask is "Can I shave ATG off the Coti well" if you can then the 8k should be right there too
Can you link me a pic or ad on the Fuji 8k maybe I have tried it at a meet and just don't remember

Thanked: 3795It really depends on your face as much as the state of the honing. Some guys' skin is too sensitive to ever shave ATG.
Any experiment you are willing to do and can learn something from is probably a good thing. If you can get a good shave off of your coticule edge then yes, odds are very good that you will be in the same ballpark with the Fuji. It may be better or worse depending on your coticule and how you end up using the Fuji. I have a Fuji but have done little with it yet. It's just sitting on the shelf taunting me.
Basically, yes, it's worth testing and experimenting. You may not have it optimal on the first try but odds are good that your whiskers will grow back again so you can hone and shave test more than once!

Thanked: 55Yup it's the Naniwa Gouken Fuji. I know it's my stupidity, but I can never resist throwing myself in the deep end. Started honing and shaving together with just a couple of razors honed by hatzicho as a reference. His Thuri finished edges still give me tiniest of weepers that go with cold water after atg. Off one of my coticules I get the same effect. (definitely sensitive skin). Thanks guys for the replies. My question has definitely been answered. Will test shave off 8k when I'm back from holiday.

Thanked: 1082Whilst i haven't got the 8k I have the 10k and will test shave a new razor at the 10k before moving on to a gok 20k or whatever natural finish I fancy. I did just this the other day and had forgotten how good the Naniwa 10k is, it really was very nice.
Sometimes i think we get so bogged down with all these fancy finishers we forget about the bread and butter hones. I think its very easy for someone new to honing to look at posts proclaiming this or that finisher is the best, i know its been said many times before but if you cant get a ccs from the Norton/Naniwas 8ks adding bigger and better finishers is only going to lead to frustration.
