Welcome to SRP.
Tape, yes! Someone new at honing should use tape on any razor they put to stone.
As the others have said. Follow that. We enjoy helping folks to learn this hobby but take you time.
Buy a couple low cost razors to practise honing with and a couple that are shave ready to use. It will take a lot of the issues out of learning to shave. It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 4829I learned to hone with new and new old stock razors. None of them died a premature death. I did use tape and I did go to meets to learn to hone better. There is tons of information and people proficient at honing here to help. Important things are known quality hones, using tape and a decent loupe. It’s easier to learn with good quality razors.

Just bought this dovo bismarck for 30€, so I can practice.
The seller said it came from a German Battleshipfrom 1939.. don't know if it's true but ok..

Thanked: 3228Hard to really tell from the photo but it looks like you do have a decent condition blade to learn honing on. I'd tape it and use very light strokes, likely lighter than when you sharpen a knife. Take your time and make sure the bevel is set all along the edge before going up the hone progression. If it all works out you'll have a spare razor to shave with. Have fun and let us know how you make out Be sure to ask if you have an issue as you go.
Nice thought about it coming from Schlagschiff Bismarck but it is just a name Dovo used on a line of razors. You never know though.

Thanked: 13249Wow I just read through this thread and just have to say
"AWESOME"
Really solid, well-written advice based on actual experience, that is very refreshing, was over on another forum trying to help a guy out and read some of the Dumbest advice about SR honing I have read in sometime
This is why SRP was always, and will always be, the gold standard for SR info"No amount of money spent on a Stone can ever replace the value of the time it takes learning to use it properly"

Thanked: 559Glen, if you didn’t know it already, your opinion carries a lot of weight here. It is reassuring to know that SRP is doing stuff right.
Some of the discussion on other threads seems to be questioning the current incarnation of the site. It is refreshing to hear from someone whose reach is greater than many of ours that the information, advice and interactions here have valueDavid

Thanked: 315Yep. Not a pro at honing, but I know enough to tell you that you have gotten really solid advice.
That Dovo looks like a great first razor if there are no cracks or large chips.- Joshua

Thanked: 0Could not agree more!
On a lot of other forums (not about razors perse), new people are afraid to post a new topic because the regulars start referring to other posts and topics and redirecting blabla, go look, already answered,... (like everyone knows every forum by heart :-o ), but not here! thanks everyone for being helpful!

Looks like you are about ready to shave-test your first razor that you have learned how to honed on your own.
Congratulations and good luck!--Mark
