It sounded to me like there was both a little bit of sarcasim and a little bit of sincerity in his comment. I would like to think that Lynn respects the fact that many of us are so dedicated to learning the art of honing (and some of us are getting pretty good at it because of the fact that we can share our experiences and ideas with each other); however, I also assume that he probably thinks that we get a little carried away with the details at times. Of course I could be wrong.

The only time I've used tape on a hone is when there is a very elaborate spine or in the case of a couple of these goldbugs...gold plating on the spine. Afterwards, I'll hit hte blue and yellow begians with the tape as well just for consitency.
Typically I use no tape and figure while the DMT may remove more metal then I want from the spine, I never expect to bring a razor back to the DMT unless I have chipping. The coticule is all I use for maintenance.
