Naniwa's never lapped
Hi guys,
I just have a quick question.
3 Naniwas landed yesterday, 3k-8k-12k.
I lap my 1k Norton with a 400 diamond plate. How best to lap those 3 Nani's, I could use the 400 plate on them or maybe not!
Ready to lap, lap, lap so any advice would be welcomed.
Actually,did I say a question? Ha Ha
I have seen this Naniwa 1k for a reasonable price. Is it decent as a 1K bevel setter and is it just spray and go like the Super Stones, I am not a fan of soaking my stones, I just want to spray and get on with it.
I can't justify the cost of a 1K Chosera and I only hone for myself anyway so it might be a bit of overkill.

Thanked: 563I have the 1k SHAPTON PROFESSIONAL KUROMAKU STONE.
It is splash and go (no soaking required) and comes in a plastic case that doubles as a stone holder.
I am quite pleased with it. It’s hard and does not dish easily so does not require frequent lapping, just a cleaning with a rubbing stone once in a while.
The price is also quite reasonable. I’ll PM you with a Canadian vendor I have used in the past.David

Thanked: 56I watched a hone review video by Burrfection and he is not impressed with the 1K superstones. He is a knife guy, not a razor guy, but he said that the polishing agent they put in the stone slows down the cutting and that since you are going to progress to higher grit stones, why polish on stone 1.
Note that I have no personal experience with the 1K SS, but I would say play around with the ones you have now before getting the new one. In fairness, I do have the 12K and not sure that I like it.If you're wondering I'm probably being sarcastic.

I do a bit of edge restoration every now and then. The Super stone worked OK. But I found that I was wearing it down pretty fast, so I bought the Chosera 1K, along with their dressing stone. "The Brown Turd"
That combo is awesome. And I've maybe lapped the Chosera 2 or 3 times, since I did it the first time. Several years ago.
So if your looking for a bevel setter, the one u show should be just fine. But if your going to start restoring, I'd get ths chosera and brown turd
BTW...I don't care for the 12k either. Too crisp, for my liking.
And hate um, for knifes. Too soft.Last edited by outback; 05-06-2021 at 05:55 PM.

To be honest, that guy doesn't know what he's talking about, the 1K Naniwa super stone doesn't polish it's a very efficient universally used bevel setting stone, used by the majority of straight razor users, If you want good information regarding stones for razors, then never ask a knife guy.“Wherever you’re going never take an idiot with you, you can always find one when you get there.”

Using a 400 Atoma diamond plate works fine on all the Naniwa and Chosera stones, I have used the Chosera 1K, 3K, and 5K for years including the Naniwa Super stones, you can't better the stones they do the job hard to beat.

As I was talking about a synthetic 1K stone I will say that I have played around with what I have (1k Norton) for about 16 months. I don't have any problems with my Norton, it's a good and capable bevel setter, no complaints.
The only reason I am even thinking of getting another 1k synth is because I took delivery of a 3k, 8k and a second 12k Naniwa which are spray and go and so convenient that I would like a 1k that is spray and go too. It's a personal thing, but I would prefer not to have a bowl of water slopping about on my bathroom floor, especially as our 3 cats think I put it there especially for their benefit and won't stop drinking out of it.
As far as the Naniwa 12k goes, I have one, two now actually. I find it's horses for course. I have put a Coti edge on some razors, an Ark edge on a couple, but I also have one that really prefers the synths, if I had problems with a Naniwa 12k edge a minute on the Crox strop would tame it a bit.
I will just say, when I first started to get interested in refreshing my razors, almost everyone suggested I get a 12k Naniwa, that was good advice but even a 12K Nani can bugger up an edge if take your eye of the ball.- - Steve
