Thanked: 16Ending a pyramid on a norton 4000/8000
After the last pyramid, should I do say 10 additional laps on just the 8000 side or should I still be doing the 1/5 pattern to finish?
i.e.
1/5
3/5
5/5
3/5
3/5
1/5
1/5
1/15
or just
1/5
3/5
5/5
3/5
3/5
1/5
1/5
1/5
thanks.

I've had good success doing either. I've had easier success doing 30-40 8k strokes at the end for "finishing". I say it this way because I know many other members use a coticule for finishing or some other higher grit hone.
The problem I had initially with the pyramid was hitting the target and testing the edge enough (like after each pyramid).

Bump:
Since I am sans Couticle or 12k Chinese I am just trying to figure out what is the best way to finish.
Currently I am doing my pyramids like a good little boy (yes, yes, I know "different strokes different folks ) followed by linen (thanks Tony!) followed by latigo (thank Tony! x2). I can pop hairs on my arm but it still pulls when I shave! (After a 15-30 minute shower, pres-shave oil, and a silvertip badger brush with some nice trumpers almond!)
Also... just to add information... I own, and have watched, both Lynn's DVD and Bill's CD not to mention various videos/pdfs in SRPs own library! (And I will also admit I am a bit heavy on the end of my stroke! )
So any finishing suggestions that would help me out while I acquire my true finishing stone would be great!

Try stropping 80 to 150 laps on your local newpaper's want ads section (lotsa' print ink = better). Put 2 to 4 layers on something flat like your hone. Works ok for me after a Swaty or 12k hone, too.

Whether you bump it or not, I'm sticking to my answer from September.

Derek,
Are you looking for advice on getting the most out of your Norton, or would you consider getting something to supplement it? A paddle strop from Tony pasted with chromium oxide will give you edges that are hard to beat for the price. You could also get Dovo's red and black pastes and apply them to the linen side of your hanging strop, or even a piece of hardwood like poplar.
A coticule bout of reasonable size would only run you about $50 or so, and the Chinese 12K is dirt cheap for what you're getting.

Thanks Josh!
I think I am mostly looking for more information about how to get the most out of my Norton. I know there are plenty of great other options for finishing. But thank you for the write-up! I am always ready to learn something more!
But I am interested in understanding more about the newspaper trick!Last edited by oSPANNERo; 02-17-2008 at 02:07 PM.

This link for info on newspaper compared to some hones. My Grandfather and a lot of old-timers used it regularly. In a pinch it can even substitute for a leather strop. I use it right after my finishing hone.
Some say newspaper ink acts like a fine paste. I just know that it seems to make my edges sharper, and less likely to cut me, all at the same time. I also use newspaper to dry the very edge after shaving, 1 or 2 laps right before the mineral oil (my local climate is quite humid in the summer).
Try it and see how it works for you. Let us know what you think.Last edited by Sticky; 02-17-2008 at 05:29 AM.

If you're looking to learn more about finishing on the Norton, I'd suggest reading everything you can that Alan (AFDavis11) has written about it. You can search for his username in the advanced search section.
Alan can get way more out of that stinkin' hone than I ever managed. And he's got a knack for explaining things to boot.

Thanks Josh! . . . the $10 spot is in the mail. Next week can you say your shaving with one of my blades?
