I can't escape the feeling that friend danzyc is looking for a formula or detailed process that will guarantee creating a perfect shaving edge on a straight razor. From what I have read here and from what I have tried to do with my own attempts a honing, there are no guarantees that any part of the general process will work for a specific person or in a specific circumstance.

As I understand, Tim Zowada's pictures are taken from bevels he made on test pieces of steel, not razors, and not necessarily at the same bevel angle that one would find on a razor. His experiment was done to attempt to find the sharpening potential of various media. Additonally, the light source, ilumination strangth, and angle are not those that one would necessarily be able to easily duplicate for oneself in examining one's own razor.

So, friend danzyc, from what you read here, you find ideas of what one should do to try to hone a razor. When I recently tried the pyramid scheme with the Norton waterstones and finished with Belgian blue and yellow coticules on my TI razor, I got something that was shaveable. Was it as shaveable as another TI razor that Lynn Abrams honed for me? No. It indicated to me that I was on the right path, but my skills were not as developed as they could be.

Because there are no guarantees, trying to successfully hone a razor can be very frustrating. I know; I'm still frustrated, but continue to apply the advice and techniques I've found here. Maybe we'll get there one day, maybe not.

    good luck, Bruce
