Did you strop it before the HHT? My sharpened razors don't seem to be able to do a HHT straight from the stone.

Try thumb pad test after 4000 and not HHT.
Do 100 or 150 strokes on the yellow coticule with slurry making the TPT and 20 without slurry, just plain water, then strop for 30-60 strokes and make the HHT.
Do 15-20 strokes on green paste.
    strop for 60 strokes

Dont use the 4000 on a razor that dont shave well, use only the coticule for 10 to 50 strokes.
Keep the 4000 for a realy dull razor from ebay

Most would go from 4K to 8K Norton and then on to the coticule though I remember Howard recommends you can go from the 4K Norton to the coticule.
4K is probably too coarse to expect your razor to pass the HHT.

Usually backhoning is done on the final hone or 8000. I think the 4000 did more back tracking than needed. I have had excellent luck backhoning. Just remember the proper grit next time.-8 strokes.

    BEING VERY CAREFUL
Moisten the pad of your thumb and, after stropping, draw the blade very lightly across it. If it's shave sharp, the blade will feel sticky and drag across as it tries to cut into your first layer of skin. It's a difficult sensation to describe but it's fairly obvious when you feel it.

I still don't get the black bit of the story. Freshly honed/ground metal looks silvery and shiny, all darker colours on metal are either grime, staining, corrosion or rust as far as my experience goes.

There's plenty pictures in help files and Tim Zowada's post to show what a good or a bad bevel looks like. Try and look there and explain to us what you see.
