I wouldn't, as I find the Norton Flattening stone to leave
far too coarse a surface on the stone. Althought this is
not guaranteed to affect the performance of the lapped
stone, it sure affects the feel of the razor on the stone.

    I would use a DMT-C.

Not only that, but The norton flattening stone is quite soft, and if you use it to flatten a hard natural, it gets worn unevenly.

I've heard that 12K is very difficult to lap the first time. Give the Norton flattening stone a try, but if you don't seem to be making much progress, consider switching to sandpaper to knock down the high points. Once it's flat you should be able to maintain it easily.

The Norton should work but I agree with everything Scott has said here. I sold mine and use the DMT-C for lapping everything including the hard naturals.

Are you thinking of the Chinese 12k Josh, or have you heard
the same thing about the Kityama?

My bad; I was thinking of the Chinese 12K.

Give the Norton a try. If it seems like it's taking too long, you might want to consider another medium for the initial lapping.

i personally use the dia-sharp DMT-coarse stone to do my flattening now. totally in love with this stone. it works fast but not so fast that it leave striations or anything of problems.

did my chinese 12k and was able to wash it with water and go right to using the stone on a blade without any problems.

its not expensive and buy a "hone holder" rubber thing when u get one
