Thanked: 0Honers Anonymous
My name is Chris and I can't hone to save my life.
I got myself a Norton and thought that all of my razors would magically become sharp as scalpels and I would be good to go.
I got Lynn's video and it helped a little but all the pyramids in the world haven't really seemed to do the job.
right now all the razors that I have honed are sharp enough to pop hairs off of my arm but definitely leave something to be desired when I shave my face with them.
Based off of other shave ready Str8s I've used they aren't cutting it (pun intended).
I just do a standard pyramid. Most of my razors aren't too bad off to begin with but even trying to freshen them up leaves them too dull to get a clean shave out of them.
Any sage words of wisdom or suggestions or people going through the same thing?

Polish.
Soak the stone a little.
Flip the stone 4K Norton side up, then slap yourself in the face.
Flip it back over on the 8K side and say "good boy"
Flip it back over on the 4K side and then stomp on your right foot.
Flip it back over on the 8K side and back hone 6 laps, and say "good stone".
Then forward hone on the 8K side 30 laps with controlled, slow, careful stokes with no pressure and equal distance on each side of the stone using the same weaving x pattern (same meaning each side of the blade gets the same exact pattern as the other side).
Flip the stone over on the 4K side and say "your too rough and tumble for my sensitive skin!". It helps a little to shake your finger at the 4K side when you do this. The motion should look like this:
Then strop lightly for 40 passes on a taut strop and see if that helps or hurts, and then re-post.Last edited by AFDavis11; 04-19-2008 at 01:29 PM.

Thanked: 0That's exactly what I've been doing and I'm still not getting results
I think maybe the problem is I had the wrong colored candle burning while I was doing it.

You were burning candles? Ohhhh shhhhheeesh. Why didn't you say so. If you make a little Norton stone doll and hold it over the candle flame you'll probably get the real stone to respond. Just watch to make sure you don't burn your fingers.

Thanked: 0I have made the voodoo norton as suggested. I think what was happening is that I did the honing ritual wrong and it angered the straight razor gods.
I'll sacrifice two virgins and call you in the morning.

But Seriously
Well, if I tell you this, I'll probably end up losing you as a customer if I ever decide to sell a razor (so for my RAD is so bad I may enter a 12 step program).
1. I had exactly the same problem you have with the Norton. It must be voodoo, and since I am not religious, it doesn't work for me.
MY NORTON IS CURRENTLY WEIGHING DOWN THE BOTTOM OF MY CAT'S LITTER BOX.
2. I use the DMT 600, 1200, and 8000 (3 Micron) hones instead of the Norton. Much, much, much, much, much, much better results. From these I go to my barber stones, then strop and shave.
3. Get a microscope.
4. Also, please get a microscope.
5. Did I remind you go get a microscope? It should have at least 40 and 100 power magnification.
One last thing: If you really want to keep using that norton, it could be you have the voodoo and don't know it. If your razor cuts your whiskers but grabs and hangs up a bit, or seems to irritate, go back to your strop. Strop it at least 100 strokes before giving up. Then strop it 50 more.
Then try it again. If it didn't improve, then it probably won't with stropping.
Hope this helps...
