Default does anyone sell lapped nortons?

I know individuals regularly sell their used, lapped norton hones on srp, but does anyone sell lapped nortons regularly as a service? i know the dmt d8c is a multi-use item, but in reality i would purchase one only because i needed it once to lap the norton.

Use 400 or 600 grit wet/dry norton sandpaper. Its $4-5 for about 10 sheets and you can get it at home depot and near every big box home reno store.

After that draw a grid with a pencil and rub it off on the wet paper laid down on a flat looking linoleum counter top. Do circles. The grid will wear off in the high spots first and the low spots last. Once the grid is gone, draw a new one and it this new one should rub off in a couple passes.

Shipping a stone around would be worth more than the $4-5 for the sandpaper. Hope this helps.

You need to lap the norton -at least the 4K side, which is softer- every couple of razors. It becomes dished out after a while.

So buying a lapped one does not free you from having to do lapping after having hones a couple of razors.

I ap mine every time I use them, that way I only need to rub it a couple of times to keep it flat.

I use the actual Norton flattening stone for some of my dad's Japanese waterstones and my stones. It works really quickly, the only gripes are that it might need to be lapped itself eventually, and it leaves the stones' surfaces a little bit rough right after lapping.

This is what I do too. I have a DMT (325?) course plate, but it still leaves scratches on my hones. So I use the DMT to lap the Norton flattening stone and use the Norton to lap all my other stones (I finish the finer stones on 800 grit sand paper after the Norton FS to smooth them out a little).

The norton stone is finer than the DMT 325?

I thought it was the other way around.

Howard at theperfectedge.com sells Nortons and will lap them for you at an additional $5 per surface. The countertop method assumes your countertop is flat.

I don't know which is finer, but it works....Maybe the DMT is just harder?

I would hope the DMT is harder...it's embedded with diamonds.
But I have noticed that the Norton lapping stone is a little bit smoother than when my dad first got it.

+1 Lapping is not a one time event. You need to do it regularly.
