Take this Chrisl ( parental discretion advised!)
I just picked this hone up from OLD-SCHOOL and boy is it a beauty! My scans do not do it justice! I ran two razors across this hone that I considered shave ready and it made a noticeable difference! I also ran two other razors across this hone that I could shave with, but they weren't quite up to snuff and two razors that I have been having fits with trying to hone them on a coticule and they remained slightly sub par, and on all razors this stone made a marked improvement, and each is now shave ready! One quality of this particular hone that I didn't expect was that it was a more aggressive hone than the coticule but put a finer edge on my blades than I could achieve with a coticule! I did between 40 to 100 passes on each razor with this hone which produced not only quicker results, but superior results to my coticules! OLD-SCHOOL mentioned that this hone that I purchased from him was unusual in that it was a much quicker hone than its brothers and sisters of the same name!
All in all, I am very pleased!!

Thanked: 22That one certainly was a diamond in the rough, I should have lapped the base sooner, it is just so beautiful.
The cutting speed is truly amazing given the hardness of that stone, which does appear to have a high content of Asagi stone in it, yet a great cutting power. That is very unusual indeed, actually the gentleman I bought it from said its very rare, but I am always hesitant to use the word "rare".

Thanked: 150Congrats!
I love mine, but it doesn't sound like it cuts as fast as yours.
Post pics and a short review in my review thread if you get the chance.

Methinks I detect a well-hidden case of HAD...

Sweet find I'm looking for a natural finnishing stone for my razors. While I'm looking at coticules I'm more interested in japanese stones. I have the 6k(ish) stone now and it cuts fairly well so I'm looking for a 10k+ range stone.
It sounds like this stone "family" could be what I'm looking for. Old, how often do you get these stones in? Or anything in the grit range I'm looking for...

If you don't mind me asking, how much did that set you back? I have been looking for a natural finishing hone with qualities you stated (harder than a coticule, but a bit finer edge) and that piece looks like pure art...
If you would rather not say publicly, just PM me.
If you don't want to say at all, that's fine with me of course. I will respect either way.
Edit: duh I will just check out old school's page... you can still tell me your price though, I would appreciate itLast edited by joke1176; 05-19-2008 at 02:25 AM. Reason: brain...slow...thinking...

Thanked: 22In my limited knowledge of grit ranges I estimated that they were all 10K and above, but was hesitant to actually state that on my site in case I was mistaken. However, I have received a lot of feedback/reports that they are well in excess of 15K.
I have 2 left, you can check them out by clicking here. The second hone has similar properties to the one JMS just bought, though not identical.
