    Did you round over the edges and corners of the stone? A rough edge could give a similar feeling.
    +1. Rough non-beveled or non-rounded edges can give the sensation that to me is akin to nails on a chalkboard.

    yes. Howard rounded the edges. Whatever it was I just rinsed it off.

    Now you know what to do the next time you lap it!

    I always rinse the hone and wipe it with my hand a few times to clear any residual micro-rubble off of the hone. Remember that you might be getting little chunks of debris coming out of your water tap unless you are using filter water.

    I don't filter and do rinse, so that's probably what it is. I usually get that little grit thing after rinsing or re-whetting, so it's probably just that - water poop.
