Thanked: 174I put a new bevel on a hollow ground razor with a 1500 grit wet and dry paper.
One sheet can be cut into three separate pieces.
Each piece is good to set a bevel and then throw it away.
I don't use water, I do brush the surface to ensure it is not contaminated from other grit sizes.
It' s a very effective and inexpensive way to go if you are just maintaining a couple of razors for self use.
But if you are going to hone as a hobby or to make money, a diamond hone will be cheaper in the medium term.
It takes about 10 return passes to develop a good V on a carbon steel blade. Harder steels need a little more but not more than 20 passes.

Thanked: 953I actually went to some hardware stores and could not find a single one with sandpaper about 360 grti. Do you guys recommend a particular internet vendor for 1000 grit sandpaper? I dound a couple on amazon but had never heard of them and the shipping was so expensive I'd just as soon buy a hone.

Thanked: 150I can find sandpaper up to 1k pretty commonly in hardware stores in my area. Try auto parts stores, automotive paint shops, etc. They use high grit paper to smooth painted finishes on nice cars.
Did you ask around at the hardware stores? Usually there's at least one old guy that knows where to get anything hardware related.
