Thread: razor still pulls after hone

Just a thought, when I was learning the TPT Randydance told me to take a sharp DE blade and practice on that to get the feel of what a sharp edge felt like under the thumb pad. Helped me to get the hang of it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

magnify it! ha! i was in the exact same boat you were until i bought a little magnifying scope (just a cheapy) and i could see what i was doing. after this you can experiment with different strokes and pressure. i was actually using more pressure then i needed, not enough to cause damage but enough to prevent me from hitting that HHT sharpness. i tried the pyramids and still try them sometimes but usually just use the TPT and HHT on the 4k until things are sharp and the bevel looks good under mag, then i go to the 8k for about 100 laps (i check every 10 or so with the scope to make sure everything is going fine and i am still hitting the whole bevel) and then the 12k for about 50 laps and then the CrOx and then the leather.
before i got the magnifying glass i could just barely get the razor to pass the HHT off the 8k, now they pass off the 4k no problem or i don't go up tot he 8k.
good luck and it sounds like things are improving.

Try black marker on the bevels, follow with 5 to 8 really light laps on the 8k. If the black marker shows you're hitting the entire edge, then go 20 or more stropping laps on the Chrome Oxide. Compare the DE and razor again with the TPT. If it feels close, then try a shave test without stropping first.
If the black marker shows you're not hitting the entire edge, back to 4k.
Good luck, it sounds like you are getting close.
Edit: is your Chrome Oxide on a fairly flat surface or a strop?Last edited by Sticky; 12-21-2008 at 02:42 AM. Reason: question

Magnification really helps, especially if you are dealing with a crumbling edge. Everything looks OK and tests OK until the shave and then you get what you have decribed.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
