May we speculate therefore that there is no tangible benefit from going up to the 30k Shapton?

I would say there is a tangible benefit. I have definitely seen an improvement in the smoothness of the shave following the Shapton 30K. I have the Professional not the GlassStone. Harrelson Stanely, the USA distributor, says the Glass is a different formula so I cannot speak to that model. From my personal experience I would say you can probably do as well with the Lynn Abrams felt strop and the 0.5 diamond spray for a whole lot less money.

For me so far, I have better performance from the Shapton Glass 30K than with Chrome Oxide. What I find is that my edges maintain the keenness with the 30K better than with the chrome oxide which rounds it off. I suspect its based on my own experience and capability with the different media.

I don't have a lot of time with the 30K, as I just don't hone razors as much as others here.

Hones last longer than strop pasting, that's well known. Another reason why I want to try the Shapton 30k as a finishing stone.

I was meaning the edge that I initially produce (i.e., before any shaving). The Shapton mainains that fine, keen edge better than when I use chrome oxide on a razor (where I seem to dull it down more than I should -- my lack of good technique & experience).

I haven't honed enough razors, and gotten a feel for time between touchups yet. But, I don't think it is any worse than using the finer pastes right now (and probably better, but I don't have the hard evidence of that). I honed a Geneva 1/2 hollow with it, and it mainained a great edge for quie a while. When the edge did deteriorate, however, it was apparent. I hit it with 0.9 boron carbide, and 0.5 chrome oxide; I need to go back through the 16K & 30K, and see if I can tell a difference from the pastes I used.
