I know that in many cases a good stropping will work (depending on stropping skill, of course). I think to assume that the razor needs a honing out of the box, by default, is sort of like deciding to re-charge your car battery before trying to start the car.

I've only bought 1 razor requiring more than a light finish on a Coticule or Norton 8k. I believe honing ones honing skills on a general razor stone is the most important. My 2cents. MikeB
