I just got mine today and it is indeed a 8000 mesh hone. I am pleased as punch with mine.

For a beginner, would this be a useful kit? I was looking at the DMT 8EE, but then saw this deal.

Would it be worth the money to spend more for the 3" wide stone?

IMO, yes. I'm just past the beginner stage and I still bought one (already had a 3" DMT D8EE). 600 for knives and heavy razor work, 1200 for setting edges, and EE 8000 for polish before the chrome oxide and/or 12-16k.

It's a matter of preference. I prefer a 2" width, and sold my D8EE right after buying this set. Many others like 3" better. The only way to know is to try both. If you use DMT's, break them in first.

I have some antique store razors that I'm going to try to bring back... one has a small chip on the edge so maybe the coarser stones will be the ticket to get it back in shape.

ETA: just ordered this set; looks like a great deal and gives me some quality stones instead of the Smith Arkansas stone that I've always used on my pocketknife. I also got the DMT knife guide, so my pocketknife will benefit too!

OK, I placed my order today!

Also picked up a flexible diamond DMT sheet for restoration purposes. See how that works out for fighting the pits!

    Thanks for the heads-up!

I've been meaning to get the DMT 1200 and I wouldn't mind the D6EE but how do they hone?

I have a differnt brand 1200 diamond plate (2x6), and it is excellent at setting bevels and such. I tried a DMT8EE early on in my honing, and did not appreciate it. I am now looking forward to revisiting it.

Do a search for "breaking in a DMT", as you definitely want to do that, or it can microchip your edge.

I'm also interested in how well the DMT 600 will re-work EBay wedges

    Default Good deal!

I think that deal is a good one. The D6EE they have was probably a special run made for Woodcraft as it's not in the regular catalog.
