I like the Nortons, I got the 220k/1k 4k/8k with lapping plate special at sharpening supplies dot com...It was affordable. I didn't realize that the Shapton 8k was less expensibve than a Norton. The Norton is synthetic I believe, it's not "real" like you think, it feels real, but it's not quarried or anything....They were made by an Engineer/Woodworker according to the pamplet that came with it...
Get um both. Zib is right . You will likely anyway in time. We all seem to. The question is which one do you want more first! IT is just a matter of time! heheh. MikeB

Hmmmmmm thinking I was pulling yer leg huh ???

Honestly you need to pick yer budget and get the most bang for your $$$ then go from there.... The Norton starter set is a good buy those polar bear stones look like a good buy but are un-proved Shaptons are great but are a huge investment, Coticule is the single most versatile stone out there, DMT's are flat and a good buy but might not be best for a beginner because of the speed they cut, Spyder co I know nothing about, and the list goes on and on....

Murky subject? Just give this post another week or so when you'll see 5 pages of responses, all with different stone suggestions and all of them valid and effective for those who use and advocate them.

There are many ways to skin a cat as they say in our parts.
