Decided on the Norton Starter Kit

Just need to find some project razors, other than the one i dropped

i didn't get the kit though i might as well have since i bought the 220/1k and 4k/8k separately. i have no complaints and have had great results.

next up is to find yourself a finishing hone, its not bad off the 8k with some good stropping but i like my chinese 12k. some don't though.

It was around $70 shipped for just the 4k/8k and the lapping stone is almost $30 by itself. So i figured i might as well just get it all now.

I only see myself using the 4k/8k until i get confident with it, then i may try some ebay specials on the 1k.
Dont know. still a little fuzzy on what i would use the 220 for.

I was thinking i would just to to a .5 CrO pasted balsa strop from the 8k, then normal stropping.

The 220 Norton would be good for your kitchen knives. I would be careful using it on your Straights. Use only if the 1000 is too slow taking out chips and creating a bevel. Also if you use the 220 on Straights I would use a layer of tape on the spine to reduce ware. I had the 220 X 1000 and never used the 220 on my Straights. The 1K did fine for lower end use.

Kit arrived today! I soaked the 4k/8k, then lapped with the norton flattening stone.

Used the conservative pyramid followed by some cardboard i pasted with .5 CrO powder, followed by leather stropping.

Success! First i ran it across my arm hair to see if it "popped" off. then i lather my hand and shaved it.

Finally did a full shave on my face. I only had a light stubble since i shaved this morning, but it felt sharper w/ no irritation.

I was very happy i didnt do any damage since this is the only str8 in my possession right now

Congrats Man! There's nothing more rewarding than shaving with a razor you honed yourself, it's a good feeling, isn't it.

Heck yeah, now i'm looking at ebay for cheap razors to hone

I thought i overhoned at first because it was shaving so much smoother than before.
