Approximate Grit of Swaty Hones
Does anyone know approximately the grit of Swaty Hones, both 3-line and 2-line versions. I've got a 2-line that my granddad used to hone his razors and wonder if it's suitable for touchups.
Thanks!
Cheers,
Tom

Thanked: 3795I've never been able to tell the difference between the 2 and 3 line and they look identical under the microscope.

under the microscope, my 3 line swaty is noticeably finer than my 8000 grit waterstone. i've always guessed it's 10k or so, but I base that on absolutely nothing except comparison with a known 8000 grit.

OK, I have a bunch of swatys, I have a couple of the little chocolate brown jobs, one that's a pale orange color and a large 8" gray colored swaty, How do you know, or what is a "3 line swaty?" or a 2 line. What does that mean exactly?
Anyway, Tom, Yes they're made for touch up's.
Anyone ever tried lapping one of these bad boys. It actually left marks on my DMT D8C....I'm thinking of getting a DMT EXtra Course...Last edited by zib; 03-11-2009 at 01:46 AM.

Thanked: 3795A three line Swaty has three lines of text in the imprint. A two line Swaty has two lines of text. That's it. That's the entire difference. A "Swaty" that literally says "Three Line" is not a Swaty but rather a Swaty clone capitalizing on the popularity of the Swaty.

Thanked: 3795I used a DMT 325 grit on a few barber hones and found that it lost a lot of its bite during the process. Swatys and Carborundums, especially the 102, can really do a number on it. It still works but it's a lot slower. After doing a few barber hones with it, I tried to lap a wide and narrow side of a Chinese 12K and it took me over 30 hours--I watched a lot of movies over the sink. After that, I bought the DMT extra coarse and now the only time I use the 325 is to begin to set the bevel on chipped razors or to do a final lapping after the DMTXX.
