Honing itself raises more slurry, I wonder if that is part of what you are seeing?
As long as you don't let the stone dry I wouldn't worry too much about the darkening while you are setting the bevel. (Again, I'm new to coticules so don't take this as Gospel.)

I have a bunch, used with slurry and without, They're great. IMO, The Coticule is a finisher, not an aggresive cutter as they claim with slurry. Also, I'd love to see a pic of a 1 inch thick Coticule. I'm assuming it's 6x2. They tend to run a bit thicker. The 8x3's I've seen are around 7mm. The 6x2 about twice that. Post some pics please....
