I do a lot of stone lapping. I use the DMT D8C which works great on the softer stones like Coticules. For harder stones like say, a Barber hone, I'd use the D8XX, Extra Extra Course. It's a beast...DMT Continuous surface.

I don't like the DMT's that look like cheese graters. I believed they're called "Duo Sharp"
Once I get where I need to be, I may clean up the surface with some wet/dry sandpaper, but not always. I usually get a nice clean surface off the DMT's. I hardly ever see a mark on the Coticules or Chinese 12k.

I've never touched a naniwa, but for all of my hones, I am happy with my DMT8XX. The 8" plate costs more but it ensures you maintain a flat surface. The XX version is the 120 grit and it is the only grit that DMT recommends for lapping. If you use a finer DMT you risk losing the diamonds.

I lap my Shaptons with the Shapton DGLP, and naturals with
    a well-worn D8C.

I use a D8C for all lapping. On harder hones I use a D8XX followed by the D8C.

Ceramics take too long to lap with D8C. Trust me. I gave up and ordered a D8XX.

    400 and 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper till I got my DMT 8C.

For barber hones, I have a coarser "Little Devil" from redtrader that works very well.

D8C for some and GDLP for others cause I have it. I may get a D8XX in the near future. HAD is a hard taskmaster.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

That pretty much sums it up for me, too.

I have a Global Ceramic that is one sided. I tape a piece of 100g wet dry to it and use it as a sanding block. It is flat and cheap and works great.
