Good place to pick a Coticule/BBW
Based upon the earlier topic, if I was to want to get just one stone and major of the shavers suggest a Coticule/BBW. Where is a good place to pick up one. Also what size do you suggest?
thanks

2" is a good width. It allows imperfect blades to be honed fairly easily. As for the length, i'd go as long as you can afford. The length determines how many laps it takes, so the longer it is the less work you've got.
Mine's 7 x 1" 3/4 & i find it a pretty good size.
Rob is the original source & if you know what you primarily want it for he'll select you a stone, but there are other places. It's worth keeping an eye on the classifieds.

My favorite size is 1.5x7, or perhaps 1.5x8 and I keep going back and forth on keeping my natural combo of this size (I have another very large one which I use because it's a shame not to). It may be because I have also escher and nakayama of the same size, and I'm used to it, but it seems to me that it's just the most versatile.
I'd suggest if you can get one from a senior memeber in the classifieds, or howard@theperfectedge who I believe imports them in bulk. Importing it from the quarry seems like a bit more expensive and less convenient, so unless you have a very specific request I don't think there's much benefit to it.
Oh, I believe classicshaving carries them as well. They all come from the same source anyways.
The cost is less important - the ballpark is pretty much the same, but apparently some coticules are more suitable for other tools. You would like the person who you buy from to know that the stone is good for razors, either from their own experience, or from being familiar with coticules in general (i.e. major vendor).Last edited by gugi; 04-05-2009 at 08:51 PM.

My 8 X3 BBW/Yellow combination stone became indispensable the day I got and lapped it. It proves itself over and over and outperforms my other coticules in various sizes. Just my .02!

I picked up my 8x2 from Howard at ThePerfectEdge. I wanted it for touching up and polishing purposes, so I requested a hard/slow one. He's nice to deal with, he'll answer your questions and help you if you have any specific requests. I'd be iffy on ordering a generic coticule from a vendor because, as it was mentioned above, different coticules are better suited for different tools/jobs, and you wouldn't be able to specify the use of the stone so a suitable one could be picked out for you.

i have a 1 and 3/4 by 6 inch couticle i bought from rob here in the classifieds nice and thick shipping during christmas season was 20 days not bad from belgium i would def buy from either rob or howard as they are picky about their hones and have a great reputation to uphold, both are great to deal with, my next will be an 8 by 3

Should I look into a dual natural or buy a coticule first, then the BBW. Vise Versa?
