My typical honing progression is from a 1K stone to the BBW to the coticule. Once the bevel is set, I move to the blue with slurry and add a few drops of water every 25 strokes or so to dilute it a bit. I also do about 25 with just water before moving to the coticule with just water. How many total passes on the blue? Maybe 75 or so. I don't get too worried about counting, because I don't use a real thick slurry (not too worried about rounding the edge) and I don't have to worry about a wire edge (since neither my BBW or coticule seem to produce one). Total passes on the coticule? Maybe 50 or so. That number has been dropping as I find I don't need as many strokes. I'm sure it will continue to go down. But, as with the blue, no problem if I do a few extra; it won't hurt.
If you find that the BBW isn't getting the scratches out, try the coticule with slurry, then the blue with slurry, then straight blue, then straight coticule. Coticules do tend to cut faster, but the blue is still a coarser stone. Though by that reasoning, I think you could probably go without the blue at all, which I've played with a bit. I've also played with using coticule slurry on my blue, which worked (though I didn't play enough to say if it worked much better...)Last edited by holli4pirating; 04-24-2009 at 02:08 PM.
