I do agree that the 4K/8K is faster to learn on, and may be faster to hone on too; but I would still recommend a 1K if you plan to set bevels.
I mostly prefer the versatility of using slurry and the feedback of the BBW/coticule as compared to the Norton. To me the Norton feels like an industrial tool while I feel like I'm crafting an edge on the Belgians.

Thanked: 2204I have been looking for an effective 1000 grit hone that is as fast as 1000 grit sandpaper. So far, no luck. The diamond hones are simply to harsh on the edge, been there, done that.
The 4000 Norton is much faster than any of the Belgian hones that I have tried, either the BBW or the coticule ,with slurry.
Oh ya, never sell a hone,Last edited by randydance062449; 05-13-2009 at 06:55 AM.

I haven't had any problems setting the bevel on my coticule and working all the way up on the same stone..

Hmmm, maybe I should pull my Swaty out of the drawer. Mine too has been banished for a couple of years. Do you think 220 grit paper will get the job done?
