I go back and forth between oil and water all the time. Put a little soft soap or shaving lather in the water and you can hone with water on an oilstone just fine.

Interesting! Is there enough oil still clinging to the stone after you add soapy water, that your razor blade gets oily? If so, what is your cleaning process for removing the oil from the blade? I use hot water and soap if I have to remove oil. I am afraid to use alcohol because it can damage celluloid scales. Thanks!
