Thanked: 0Naniwa 12k vs. 1 micron Diamond Paste
coming from a 8k naniwa superstone, what would you prefer, 1 micron diamond paste (i read approx. 14k) or the 12k naniwa ? could somebody compare those two ? After either one i would probably still use 0.5 chromoxide.
The diamond paste would be the cheaper option, so i wonder how it compares...

Thanked: 5I think you'll have to realistically realize that different types of steel (ie different razors) will like different finishing methods. Having said that, if your plan is to only finish one or two razors...go with the paste.
The only real reason to use a stone instead if you're going to finish with CrO is if the razor has a problem with microchipping (which can happen with diamond cutting because of the geometry of diamonds and their aggressive shape).
Or if you plan to finish many razors you'll probably end up with both anyway.

I have both, I prefer the Naniwa 12k, it'll leave your blade feeling much more smooth than Diamond paste. The Diamond Pastes, I have 1.0, .5 and .25. The .25 is by far the most irritating to me. (irritating on the skin that is) Normally, the other two are ok. I recently purchased the Naniwa 12k from SRD. I really like it. I have the entire set in my shopping cart right now, amongst other things. After the Naniwa, I go to my pasted paddle with Cro2.

It is for me, Your results may vary. Some razors, (steel) will react differently to different things. Diamond pastes will make your edge more keen. I keep a log of what I do specifically to each razor. What hone, with or without slurry, How many passes, Cro2 or Diamond, etc...That way I know what's working and what isn't. For now, if cash is an issue, go with the pastes. It'll work for sure, then down the road, pick up the other, then you can compare and see what you like better..

Thanked: 171If it's a money issue, although I haven't used the 1 micron diamond paste, I would get a chinese 12k instead of the dp. I would prefer to hone coming off the 8k rather than strop. I think this would result in a more durable edge. Can anyone confirm this one way or another? I was under the impression that honing is better than stropping for edge durability.
Wouldn't the 1 micron dp better fit in after the 12k stone and before 0.5 micron dp or chromium oxide?

Thanked: 1262I test shaved 2 razors in the last 2 days. I used the 1 micron diamond paste, which i dont usually use, then my .5 CrO.
Shaved close adn pretty effortlessly, but my face felt a little rough afterwards. I'm starting to think my face just doesnt like the edge left by diamond pastes.
