    Default Smoothing out an edge.

You can see my current progression here, which i think i am about to change.

Razor #1(Puma 4/8 Hollow) i used the chinese 12k before the pastes
Razor #2(Wapi) i went straight from norton 8k to pastes.

Both razors were sharp, pass HHT and easily shaved my face WTG/ATG.

Both were a little harsh. #1 less than #2.

With #1 i felt a tiny bit of sting in some spots after some Osage rub, but was fine after that.

With #2, same burn but more. I actually felt razor a bit of razor burn on my smooth face a few hours later. It is gone this morning, so it wasnt too bad.

I usually dont use my 1um Diamond pasted strop and just use my CrO pasted. I am wondering if this is the difference and my face just hates diamond paste.

    NOW FOR THE QUESTION:
    After all that rammbling...

What is involved in "taming" the edge? Dropping all the way back down to the 8k for a few strokes and doing my normal progression(minus the diamond paste)?

    Thanks.

If an edge is too harsh, I've had past success with giving the razor some laps on a coticule with water. Its seems to calm it down a bit without sacrificing sharpness.

The link for your progression doesn't work so I don't know if you already have a coticule that you use.

    Thanks.
This is great idea and will work.
    About pastes
i can say if you done on chin 12 k next go to chro2 this should work.
i never used diamond cannot say anything about it.
lastly when you are doing final touch it should be very light touch no pressure at all.hope this helps.good luck

I have a standard format for edges coming of the hones, that I think helps quite a bit...

    50 laps Linen / 100 Laps Leather...

Hmm, I say strop as Glen says above, then hit em on the Crome Ox for about 10-20 laps (very light), then go through the linen and leather routine again.

If that doesn't do it, either your edges are still a bit rough and DO need to go back to the 8k, or somethin' else is seriously wrong.

I'm with Glen and Joke on the stropping. I only use paste on really tough edges like some of the harder stainless like S30V or ATS-34 and some, but not all, Damascus. Once in awhile I would finish honing a razor and strop and shave and find the first pass wasn't smooth enough. I would go to the chrom ox on a flatbed or loom strop before the second pass. That always helped.

Lately I haven't had to do that but when I do I have had better luck with the 0.5 diamond spray than the paste. May be because of my application of the paste ? One way or the other the spray on the SRD felt hanger is great for when I use it. Even better than the chrome ox was. YMMV.

I have good smoothing results by using 2 or 3 layers of newspaper stretched over anything flat (usually any of my hones). 100 laps or so.

I think my problem after reading some other posts is that Wapi's just dont like diamond paste.

I dropped down to the 8k..and decided to make up a quick pyramid in my head.

I think i did. 2/4,2/4,1/3,1/3 and then did 50 strokes w/ slurry on chinese 12k, 50+ just wet. then CrO. Then 60 linen, 100 leather.

    No diamond paste this time.

It now passes HHT and shaves without giving me burnination.
