Thanked: 286Thuringian razor hone vintage
How many laps are needed to finaly polish razor on this type of hone with water? And when used with slurry does this type of hone become less sharp like wise with coti slurry dulling if too dense.

IME it depends on the individual hone. I have some Eschers that are fast cutters with slurry and some that are slow with or without. The bit about slurry dulling the edge is something I haven't really noted on mine probably because when I have used them it has been taking a razor with a good bevel and then honing with slurry and following with water only to finish. Sort of the same thing I do with a cotucule with the diluting of the slurry as I go. I have a Muller that is dark blue and a very slow cutter and a vintage Hollenzollen that is blue/green dry and black wet. It is faster than the Muller but slower and probably not as fine as some of my Eschers. The Thuringans don't have garnets. They cut with quartz, embedded in chalk so maybe the slurry would have a different effect than the garnet in the coticule. Those are the only Thuringans I have experience with. Best thing to do is give it a try and see what it does and report back to the forum.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 171As with pretty much any hone, check every 10 laps or so and see where you're at, but I've found that my vintage thuringians/eschers typically like around 30 to 50 strokes with water only depending on the razor and hone choice I've not tried any with slurry. I rinse every 10 or so whether it's needed or not.

You can most definitely go to an Escher after a Coticule, especially depending on your Coticule, As far using a slurry, I wouldn't. Why would you want a slurry on a Escher or Thuringian anyway? At this point your blade should be basically shave ready and your putting the final polish on it. A chinese 12k is the only polisher I'd use a slurry on for finishing/polishing. But that's me, everyone has their own preference. If you need to use a slurry, go to a lower grit. On your "vintage thuringian", it's not an Escher btw, I'd do 15 strokes/lapps and test...by shaving, no hht or any of that, shave with it...If it still isn't up to snuf, do 10 more, then test shave again...
And as Jimmy said, each stone is different, so your going to have to see what your's can do, If you really want keeness, get some diamond pastes or film....Last edited by zib; 05-27-2009 at 03:54 PM.

The only Escher I've used was a 1x5" Y/G, so with
the reduce honing area I would typically make 30
passes without slurry. I did have a slurry stone of
the same material, but I used it primarily to keep
the surface smooth and fresh.
The advice to do 10 passes at a time is right on,
that's the best way to get a sense of how the edge
is progressing.

Thanked: 286I don't intend to use slurry as i think water gives better polish on any finishing hone especialy coticule. so basicly just hone and test shave for smoother shave not that coticule is'nt but i'd like to try somthing differant

Thanked: 171Yeah I go to the Escher/vintage thuringian after the coticule or similar and IMO it significantly improves the edge.
