I lean toward narrower hones myself. I think Holli gave me the idea of turning a Chinese 12K on it's edge, and honing on the edge. I liked it instantly, especially on that stone.

One change I've made over the past few months is holding the hone in my hand, rather than in a stone holder, as I do with my larger/wider hones or DMTs. My Nakayama Asagi is just under 2" wide and has an irregular base, so I started honing with it in my hand. I liked the feel so much that I started doing it with all my hones, naturally favoring smaller, narrower, thicker stones. I can "feel the steel" much better using two hands, than using one hand with the stone sitting in a holder on a table. I still use a holder for bevel setting, but everything after that is held in my hand.
