    Default new honing vids?

don't know if any of you have seen these videos yet, or if they are any good (as I have yet to watch them), but I figured I would pass them along:

I notice he is using more of a progressive method rather than a pyramid, and I had just one question:

obviously it works for him, and he is experienced and knows what he is doing, but I always thought the Norton 4k was a "fast cutter" and that doing ~100 laps on it as seen in the video would be way too much and might even cause problems.

interestingly enough, he does tons of 4k passes and relatively little 8k laps in comparison, claiming the 8k to be known for easily overhoning.

is it generally ok to do so many laps on 4k? I was always tentative with that grit, not wanting to mess up the edge...maybe I'm not doing enough at the 4k level.

Number of the strokes is depend on a lot factors blade material, grind, stones condition, etc.
the best you can make sure to move from 4k to 8k is make sure when you cut your arm hair ,You will see hair start to jump this means you are ready to move next grit.
i have done more laps on 4 k side that means it wasn't ready to go to 8k side. in the other hand i checked in the middle of the honing on 4 kside and mention blade is not getting sharp on the tip. it has a little warping. if you have similar problem you should fix it before going to 8k.
i was trying to use as much as different hones possible to show how to use them. that is why i use dmt then norton then slip stone etc.
    hope video will help.

I have watched the videos and i noticed he did a lot on the 4k which i think i might be wrong but sham did'nt do a lot on the 1200 dmt so it seemed like he made up for it on the 4k i think i heard him say he does'nt do to much on dmt i'm sure he will clarify that. When i set bevel on dmt that does most of the work for me i then go to 4k untill i feel that gritiness disapear when using tpt it normaly takes 30 laps i always do 50 even 80 but keep checking tpt untill blade feel sticky but smooth and not gritty. 20 is the norm for 8k.

if edge doesn't have any chips etc you should set bevel and move on. Now in that video razor was from bay and i thought it will have bad edge at first after couple passes on dmt i checked the edge and got surprised how good was edge. that is why i moved to norton 4k side. Norton 4k side when you use it particles constantly accumulates on the surface of the hone . it needs to be cleaned often to get best out of norton if you don't clean it up it does slow down norton's cutting ability. I never did really clean the surface just put some water and move metal particles with my hand if i could. That is the reason's more on norton and less on dmt.hope this clear's up.

Agreed, my norton 4k seems very prone to getting gunked up. I actually tried putting some rubbing alcohol on a tissue and wiped the surface. It removed most of the gray residue. But nothing replaces a good quick refreshing lap on the DMT.
