Thanked: 1262Coticule and Naniwa 12k
I am currently using coticule and naniwa 12k, but I am wondering if I am really gaining much from the naniwa?
When I was using norton 4k/8k, I could definitely tell a difference. With coticule, i'm not so sure...
Has anyone played around with the combination?

Thanked: 13246Let me see if I have this right Ben???
Before you were using a progressive system going from 4k - 8k - 12k ???
Now you are using a Coticule with a varied slurry - water and then going to the Naniwa 12k ????

Thanked: 1262sorry. should have given more detail.
I am basically using this: A simple honing method with DMT-E, Belgian Blue Whetstone and Coticule - Straight Razor Place Wiki
I have been experimenting with coticule -> naniwa and naniwa->coticule; And using pastes/not using pastes.

Thanked: 1262Btw... Nothing is "broken" per se. I am just wondering if i would be better off with something other than the naniwa 12k after the coticule.
Here are the details of the last 2 razors i honed.

Thanked: 13246Here is the thing at first you were doing a perfect progression 4-8-12
Or sharpener / polisher / finisher
When you switched you blurred the lines...
You are going Bevel setter / S L O W sharpener (BBW) / Varied stone (Coticule) / Finisher
I think you are taking the edge all over the place....

Ok on 1 st one you come until 12k you are fine .
then problem starts.
you don't have to go to leather strop now.
go to diamond paste 10-20
next go to
chro 10-20
Then you can go to leather strop.
Now for second option too much mix.
I would say you can stop on Naniwa and move to pastes
or you can do same after coticule
if you don't have diamond paste then use chro2 but a little more laps example 60 etc until you get satisfied edge.
then go to strop.
hope this helps.
by the way early message we post (broken link)same time i didn't see your post until now.Last edited by hi_bud_gl; 06-30-2009 at 02:09 PM.

Looking at your blog it appears that you have a fixed regimen, i.e. a certain amount of strokes on each of the grits ? As opposed to doing some strokes and then TPT or popping hair off of the arm to test the edge ? I try to test the edge every so many strokes so that I don't go past it. When I feel it is sharp enough I move up the ladder.
I try and go with the admonition that Lynn uses,"Less is more". I don't worry that much about whether the previous scratch pattern is completely removed as long as the scratches are uniform and the edge is sharp. Good on you for keeping a record of your honing. I got that idea but have been terribly inconsistent in practicing it.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 1262Yeah, i finally started keeping a record because my memory is horrible. Couldnt remember when something was last honed or if i taped or not.
I use TPT, but for me after a certain point i cant tell the difference. i do 50 strokes on the bbw w/ slurry, test, then do another 50 if needed.
arm/leg hair is what i do after the bbw/slurry stage. Only way "I" can tell how it is progressing.
Thanks.

It sounds like you need some blind testing! Let me send you a few razors that need honing - do some naniwa last and some coticule last, then send them back to me but don't tell me what they were finished on
I won't even charge you for the exercise!Find me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage
