I would agree that a decent electrical tape really does work the best. Scotch and 3M are good brands.

Stuff like scotch tape and masking tape and a bunch of others really don't work. They start coming apart as they see the hone coming at them.

There is no tape better suited that's readily available as far as i know. Others that come to mind would either wear through, causing uneven honing, or have adhesive that provides too much cushion.

My point was really that I've noticed several aggressive posts recently, either contradicting decent advice, or just making a facetious comment. The only aim, seemingly, to be abrasive.

And that people is not the spirit or intent of this forum as Ben.Mid just said. We are hear to learn and help others not have a competition to see who can outdo another member with abrasive comments.
You'll have a lot better experience if you have an open mind. Besides if you tend to be an abrasive poster people will just turn you off after a time which helps no one!

I too have been using the PVC electricians tape on the rare instances I tape a razor and I've also found a few advantages. Take it for what it's worth since I normally prefer to hone without tape.

The kind I've been using is not as wide as the traditional black tape and doesn't need to be cut in half lengthwise. For most razors it's perfect as is to wrap around the spine.

It seems to glide just a little better over the hone. It seems to be a bit firmer, more plastic rather than softer like the black tape.

I have yet to tell a difference in wear over the black tape. I do only use it once and toss it after each razor. I don't reuse tape.

I bought a multi-roll pack that came with white, red, green and yellow. The rolls are smaller so it's probably a bit pricier, but.....it's tape and I don't hone enough razors to make the cost difference an issue.

I have an ATS-34 mirror finish razor that scratches if you even sneeze by it. That one is a razor I've taped. BTW, that one is chippy and I have yet to get it where I want it. It's my rainy day razor at this point.

Actually, if you're in the honing forum, it's occasionally acceptable.
