Default What sort of tape to use?

    Hi all,

I've been reading up on honing and I've seen about a bazillion different points of view about taping the spines of razors before you hone them.

I've dug up an old razor that I am planning on restoring and I will tape up the spine to stop any excessive wear and protect it (as much as possible!) from my less than skilled hands.

I was wondering what sort of tape I should use? Masking tape? Duck tape? Does using tape clog up the hone?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

I would go with electric tape as highbud says as duct tape would have to be tapered in order for it to fit a razor. the width of the electric tape is just right. other than that I think the duct tape is durable enough to do the job. But the glue on it might be too strong and be annoying to remove/leave residue.
The black eletric tape, I use at least, leaves no residue and is easy to remove.

I have had no problems with "clogging" when using electric tape.

    Hi,
This is the stuff. It lasts so long that you could get nice expensive stuff if you wanted, but it makes little difference. I've only put the link in to clarify it for you. There are better sources & i prefer to buy mine from a local business. This is a quality brand.

Sticky tape. I'm being somewhat facetious, but at times it does seem that too many people here over analyze things.

It's a question that does come up now & then. There are so many tape's available, but only one that's really suited to this application. Granted, he may have found out with a search, but i think it's a valid question.

I have been experimenting with PVC electrician's tape. I was waiting to post about this but, since it came up, I have found several advantages:

-white no more black residue on my coarse hones
    -slides a little easier
-Much less adhesive left on the blade any residual comes off with a few rubs from a shop cloth

    disadvantages

    - surface has to be completely dry or it won't stick. I could get sloppy with this with the old black stuff
    - pretty much good for only one use
    - costs a little more.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. Any tape that sticks will work. Some may be harder to use than others, but they will work.

I always assumed we recommended electrical tape over "sticky tape" because it showed a good resistance to wear versus lack of compression ratio. Plus it's cheap, not too wide, and uniformly thin.

FCC...I assume you use a different tape, which tape do you prefer?
