    Default Soap up your DMTs

I usually use water for my DMT hones. Last night I added a bit of soap to the mix, and I really liked the result. Usually honing with just water, the water dissapears rather quickly. With the soap, it halped keep the water on the hone (much as shaving soap keeps the water on your face!), and I was able to get a very nice finish coming off of the DMT6EE.

    Give it a try!

When i got mine, I actually read the instructions (which is unusual for me). They recommended using a little soap. I've always used them that way & agree, it keeps the water on the hone.

I know!!! If they want you to use soap, they should include some!

+1. I found once I started adding a drop or two to the water on the plate it slicked it up real good and made it more effective.

I also quite like a very sparse amount of soap on a coti. It changes the feel slightly, but seems to have no ill effect.

The old barbers in Newark, NJ used to use the hot lather from their Lather King soap dispensers as a vehicle. Matter of fact they referred to their coticules as 'soap stones'. I haven't tried soap on a coticule this time around although back in the mid '80s I did try lather. I gave straights up back then and only picked it up again due to coming to SRP. Good thing.

I found that lather works very well on the coti. I use it on my nakayama too.

The soap is good on any waterstone, it breaks the water tension and keeps the water from rolling of the stone in one big bead after your first stroke. I know most of you guys know this, but for those who dont, there ya be!
