Default What Kind of Stone should I Get?

Okay, so I've got about five razors at the moment and they're all going to need sharpening at some point. (Get it? "Point"? Haw haw).

I've been using my leather belt as a strop, and I'm going to get one of those leather/linen combos in the future; but let's talk hones.

Mind telling me which hone on classic shaving.com would be the best? Around the 1000 level?
Assuming all five razors are relatively sharp, if not keen, I'd recommend getting a couple of paste strops first. Unless you ding the edge or acquire an outright dull razor, the paste strop will keep you going a lllloooonnngggg, long time when plain leather no longer does the trick. A small two-sided paddle strop and an ordinary paste set will cost less than $30. If you have a good careful stropping technique, strop before each shave, and avoid razor accidents, you may never need a razor hone. Well .... maybe in a few years.

I think the all around, easiest to use and most consistent hone to learn on and use is the Norton 4K/8K combo waterstone in the 3 inch wide version. Ray does sell them I believe. Lynn

Who's Ray, and where does he have these stones listed?

Also, this 4000/8000 stone... it's good for all of my sharpening needs? Will it turn a dull razor sharp?

    Cool

Ray is from Classicshaving.com. Yes the Norton 4k/8k 3" wide is pretty good.

yep the Norton 4K/8K combo is probably the best to start with. If you want to use natural stone you can go with the blue and yellow coticule stones. They are sold at the perfectedge.com. They cost more but will last forever.

Pick up a 1000 grit stone from Norton also. That will be used to remove small nicks and establish a new bevel faster than the 4000.

    Just my two cents,

I think it's cheaper to get the Nortons at Lee Valley in Canada. UPS is a nightmare over the border.

Ah, thank you, Xman. Good to get a Canadian point of view too.

I'm seeing that the stones are listed at 88 bucks or so, but that'll be less than I'd pay if I ordered it from the US, eh?

Lee Valley also sells Norton stones - for less money.

Edit: Never mind I just saw Xman's post.
