    Default Please help!!!!!

After reading all the information I can about honing online and watching a youtube.com videos I am still having trouble honing my razors!!!

I have a five day set plus one razor.

Is there anyone in the NYC area that would be willing to meet up with me to talk about honing?!

There are some members relatively close to you. Hope they jump in to assist. If you find your way to the Rochester NY area let me know and I'll try and make myself available. If you wish to chat by phone drop me a PM and I'll try and walk you through it.

For starters let us know what hones you are using, your progression and your process to determine when to go from one hone to another. What kind of straight razors are you honing and where did you acquire them from.

Something we can comment on will get you moving in the right direction.

Here is the member's map. Seems to be some in your neck of the woods. I used to live in Kearny many years ago. We could have met at the Lyndhurst Diner or the Arlington for coffee .... but that doesn't do you any good now.

That would have been really great!

    Where do you live now?

The Lyndhurst diner continues to be my second favorite, Topps Diner holds the number one spot for me though. Arlington diner is great too! They have awesome cheesecake there.

Thank you for sending me the members map.... I didn't know that was available.

Yes I used to go over to Topps in East Newark. Willie's and the Nevada in Bloomfield. Ting a Lings in Newark for Italian hot dogs or Jimmy Buffs. Jackie's Lemon Ice on the Bellville Pike and I have to mention Pizzaland also on the Pike and seen in the intro to the Sopranos TV show. Freddy made the best pizza I've ever had until he passed away and then his son continued with the same quality.

Over in Kearny I could go to the Thistle or the Argyle for fish and chips and one of the Scottish butchers for meat pies and scones or Shepard's pies. I never had the guts to try the blood pudding. I'm in South Florida the past seventeen years and none of that good stuff available here.

The razors you are trying to hone will give great shaves once you get you honing down.

Read through this post I made to assist FloorPizza. Part 4) of my post will be where you should focus. http://straightrazorpalace.com/basic...me-help-2.html

If you still have problems drop me a PM and we can set up a phone conversation.

    Good luck.

    ok....

let me ask you guys this.....

how long does it take to hone one razor or rather - how many laps on the hone? I know you can't give me a certain number, but are we talking 10 minutes, 1000 laps.

Also - what do you guys do as the test...... i can shave hair from my arms but all i end up doing is walking around with patches of hair on my arms and a shave of pain.

It really depends on the razor and its condition to begin with. An average ebay Solingen hollow ground might take me 45 minutes.... some more some less. If you go to the SRP Wiki and count how many laps you're doing with Lynn's posted pyramid method you'll find it is over 200 and that is after the bevel is set. So I guess the answer is it depends and whatever it takes.

As far as tests I start with the TNT for the bevel setting and stop when it passes that and looks good under magnification. From then on I use a combination of the TPT (mostly) and feeling the edge against the hair on my forearm.

I rarely pop the hair anymore. I feel it grab the hair and I don't need to pop it. I got tired of looking like I had a skin problem with the patches of hair gone.

OK! I got much better results!!! I honed my razor for about 10 minutes and then shaved. Needs a tad more honing, but I see how the process works now.

One more question - after you hone you should strop, correct?
