What I've been doing lately is honing a razor up to the 8k level and shaving. If it is good on the next day I will go on to a higher grit and polish or maybe see if I can get it sharper off of a dry barber hone. Firctionite, Swaty, or Carborundum.
Maybe with the same razor on the following day or maybe a different one go with 1.0 on balsa followed by 0.5 in sequence. Strop and shave. I did that today and got a smooth shave with no weepers.
I think I cut off all of the high spots, moles or what have you with my Merkur Slant with the Feather blade back when I was a DE shaver. I never get weepers with a straight and rarely a nick. I used to get both with the DE.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I've been doing what jimmy has been doing shaving of 8k then adding a polisher ie coticule then somthing differant the next time i'm quite surprised how good the shave is of 8k norton the coticule does add tiny bit more smoothness i will try 12k naniwa and compare
