Thread: Confused on the honing forum

You are right. My view of hones is more utilitarian, I don't care for them in terms of anything else. I respect the opinion of those who do. It just isn't me. Before reading that response, I had the realization that some of you gents actually just like having the stones for the sake of having them, while I only care for them for sharpening razors... I guess a lot of people look at me and my straight razors the same way... why do I need to have a RW or JC custom when I could just get a run of the mill Dovo?
No disrespect meant, but as you say, I view hones strictly in a "where rubber meets the road" context.

Thanked: 1587Posts that you would have posted in the old Basic Honing forum now simply go in the hones forum (ie here). Advance Honing remains, for those questions/posts. So in reality, all that has occurred is the addition of another forum for discussion of the hones themselves.
Hopefully this will reduce certain traffic in the basic and advanced honing areas, minimise the confounding of honing and hones in threads, and enable people to more easily find information regarding their specific interests in a particular matter (eg on specific hones and their properties, or on how to use a specific hone - cross-referencing threads across forums is encouraged).
While I agree that to get the most out of certain hones sometimes requires a knowledge of certain properties of those hones, it is still the case that hones fall into broad categories from which those properties can generally be derived. The nuances surrounding embedded or free-floating rhombic dodecahedral abrasive particulates and their effect on nano-striations produced on various metals is, in general, something best removed from discussions on the act of honing (basic or advanced), although a knowledge of the effect can be useful.

If I participated in such a thread, the topic of use and stone characteristics would certainly come up. Like was discussed earlier, I find hones interesting only on a utilitarian context. If I saw "hone porn" I'd want to know why it's special. If I were into pretty stones, I'd not be looking at hones. That was my point. But, I now understand what JimmyHAD was saying.
