Thanked: 1936Congratulations!! Great for the self esteem isn't it? Just in case your 12,000 grit Japanese waterstone doesn't come with it, be sure you get some Nagura for your slurry. I've used synthetic & natural & find that I like the synthetic a little better. You will love how this new stone polishes the cutting edge, you are well beyond the sharpening stage at this point. Keep us posted, I'd love to hear your input and edge perception after you have gone from the 8K norton to the 12K Japanese waterstone. It's a pretty big jump, so it may take twice the amount of strokes to smooth out the 8k scratches in the edge.

Personally, I think before Lynn sends you your official SRP Straight Shavers License (don't get caught shaving without one) everyone should have to sharpen their razor on a Norton 8k as the final hone and be able to get a great shave.

I am glad to hear you had success. I am still killing myself at trying to hone. I will take your success as a boon for all of us new to SR shaving, and I will keep at it until I get it.

Congrats on your success! I went the lapping paper way for my first honing. However, I will be buying some the finer stones. These will last a lot longer than the lapping paper. For setting the bevel and honing down to say, 5 microns, lapping paper is easy, for me anyway. But when you get down to 1 and .5 microns the paper tends to load and will not take much use before it needs replacing.
Now, where to buy some stones?

I love this thread too. I'm stubborn and only now do I have a shave ready razor on it's way to me. I struggled at honing my razor with a barber hone and a C12K, then I purchased a combo BBW/Coticule. I LOVE the shaves I'm getting now. Actually I seem to prefer the edge off the coticule than the C12K. Still experimenting to see but most of my shaves straight off the coticule seem more comfortable.
