Thread: Hello hello!

First of let me say that I am pleased to have joined such an outfit of knowledgeable folks!Now the bad part:My wife recently purchased a beautiful 7day straight razor set for me as a gift.However,they didnt come sharpened(very dull,likely due to local legality).They are made of 420 stainless surgical steel.What type of hone(s)would be ideal for obtaining a shaving quality edge?

It would be unusual for a vintage 7 day set to be stainless steel, so i've assumed they must be new. Is that right? If so, it would be worth us finding out which maker/brand they are before you receive guidance.

Im not sure who the manufacturer is as there is no brand name stamped on them.

Basically, if they're new, it's possible that they're not designed to actually be used. It's very unlikely that a manufacturer using shave quality steel would have produced a stainless seven day set unless it was a special order. They'd also not miss the chance to stamp their name on one! That said, there's bound to be some bugger here who has one!
If the steel's not shave quality, no matter how much you work on them, they'll never be more than a beautiful & treasured gift from a thoughtful wife, & make a great display.

If you could post a pic of one of the razors that will facilitate things a lot. There are a lot of wanna be razors made in Pakistan, that do not take edge.

Gotta agree with Ben here. Also,I may be wrong, but 420 stainless may be too soft for a shaveready edge.
