For sharpening a dull razor after a coarser hone? It depends on which hone is used before the barber hones and each razor varies, too. On dull razors, I use barber hones after the DMT EE 8k; so it might take 10 to as many as 50 laps (or more). After something finer, maybe 5 to 10 will be good. Just go until you notice a nice improvement. This is where the learning curve comes in.

For just maintaining a sharp razor that needs a touch-up, 5 laps is usually enough on the majority of my razors and barber hones.

125 to 325 is an ok starting point. Some like to finish-lap up to 1000 or even higher.
