The beauty of magnification.
Hey guys,
I just wanted to share how thrilled I am after this week of honing. I just purchased a little Micromaxx magnification device from Amazon and received it earlier in the week. The difference in honing when you're using a tool that makes you see that small in amazing. I will never hone without some from of magnification ever again. I looked at my Henckles 50 yesterday and I saw a lot of problems with the bevel that I couldn't see before. I had gotten the razor from someone on the web that was shave ready but I was never able to get a good shave from it. I thought it was due to the small size and light weight of the razor and I put it back in it's box and haven't really used it since.
You see, the bevel was very messed up when it was set and there for the shaves weren't good at all. The bevel looked like a wave of water, moving up and down up and down the whole length of the razor on both sides.
Yesterday I breadknifed the blade and then started it from scratch on my DMT-E moving to the norton 4/8k and then the naniwa 12K. I polished up the edge with a coticule and water pass and added some CrO for the heck of it. This is now my Best razor! The shave was out of this world. I would have never had been able to hone this razor to such a point without super human eyes. I strongly recommend anyone that is new at honing or wants to get into honing their razors they get one of these little things. They're GGGGGGGreeeeeat!

Being able to SEE was one of the keys for me....... Now if I could just improve my stroke.
Have had some wonderful honing last week. Shaving is much better too

Sounds cool and I'm going to get one. That 60 to 100x is attractive to me. I have a 30x microscope but light is a hassle. I also have a darn good 30x eye loupe but I've heard 60x is a lot better. Above that I personally think it is too much of a good thing. I guess the one you're referring to is this one here ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yep that's it! It works great, the only complaint I have about it is you need to focus constantly while holding the razor. I solved some of this issue by laying the razor down on a table and just hovering the scope over the razor while it's resting still. Of course when you move the scope though the focus moves a little bit anyway.

Thanked: 735I'm a magnification addict as well. I don't use it 100% of the time, but when I'm befuddled, it sure comes in handy (also just for fun!)

Thanked: 199I have that one, and the one from Radio Shack as well. The only bad thing about the one you linked is that it uses those tiny watch batteries, not AAA like the description said when I bought it on Amazon.
Here's a tip, go buy a big pack of Size 312, hearing aid batteries...they are the same size and specs as the ones that they SAY to use in it, and only cost about 1/10 the price. Just a little tip from me to you
Also, for looking thru the scope, I rest one end up near the spine, and use my finger and thumb as a "guide" to slide it up and down the spine. Keeps you from having to "hover it" over the edge.
Hope that helps!
