Well lol if I get sucked into straight razor shaving that much it won't matter what hone I buy, I'll end up buying em all from collector craziness lol.

There is ton's of info on this site about the norton's and how to use them. You can get a 220/1000 4000/8000 and a flattening stone for cheap around $120 if you look. Many of the senior honers on this site love those stones for there predictability and ease of use. This was my first set of hones and I use them for almost all my razors. I do have a coticule and love it but am glad I learned on the Nortons. Oh and for the most part I finish on a Chinese 12k followed by cromox pasted strop.

I say save money by buying top shelf first time around.
It's figuring what that is that costs.

That's a fair thought. However, a good argument can be made for going budget to minimize start up with the understanding that it can be resold at a cost that will recoup a fair amount of the initial investment. It's tough to know if one will want to stick with honing when they start, so it's harder for me to endorse the buy top shelf approach. Just my observations.
