I've actually never used a pyramid, so you'll have to wait for someone else to chime in. I use his "newer" "circles and X's" routine. On the 1k, I set the bevel using equal numbers of circles on each side followed by 10-15 X strokes. This is done with "firmness" - which is a moderate amount of pressure. It's tough to get the pressure right and keep it even all along the whole razor, so I don't recommend new honers try it. After that, move to the 5k and do 40 circles on each side with the same firmness, then 40 circles on each side with no pressure, then 10 X's with no pressure. Then up to the 8k for 10 X's with no pressure. Then onto the finisher for... well, depends on the finisher. Then you could add in 10 passes on chrome ox or .5 diamond or whatever you like. Then strop (I do 50 passes, haven't experimented with stropping because I don't like stropping), and then shave.
I might up the numbers if I find that a razor is slower on the hones, and I also up the numbers when honing smiling blades, because I don't get constant contact with the whole blade so, per stroke, each part of the blade gets less time on the hone. But then again, numbers are never set in stone...

Thanked: 198ok, well that awnsers my question, i just sat and watched the youtube video from the 09 convention, so i understand what you are saying about the circle stroke. so i will wait and see if anyone else chimes in, if not, thanks for all the help, now i just have to wait for the stones to get here. which ironicly, i wish they were here now, i had to stay home form work due to bad weather, and i work nights so i have nothing to do but play on the computer till morning, when i could be playing with my stones, if i had them
