Thanked: 198hones on the way
well after many long hours of thought, many hours of reading the posts in the forums, i have finally spent the money, and ordered my naniwa's. i ordered the 5k, and the 8k, and the 220k lapping plate. i do want to know, when they arrive, do i need to lap the stones right off the bat, or can i just spray them down and hone away.

I tried my 5 and 8k straight out of the box and found that they were fine without lapping. But that is the luck of the draw. Yours might be great, they might be terrible, or they might be somewhere in between. Unless you feel like taking the time to experiment, I would suggest you lap them before using them.

Thanked: 198then i guess for safety sake, and because i will probably be pretty anal about the hones, i will lap them from the start. i just hope that lynn and the guys, are able to make it to their shop by monday to get the order processed, what with all this darn snow were getting. i swear, i hear anybody mention global warming and i think i will choke them with a snowball.

Since the warehouse and packing facility is in Don's basement and USPS picks up from his garage, I'm pretty sure they'll manage...

Thanked: 198now thats what i call service, and i didnt know that it was in his basement, i guess that saves on storage rent. and a quick question for you holli, using those two stones, would it be safe to say, that i would be alright using my escher as the finish stone. or do i need to invest in a higher grit later on

Yes, I think your Escher would be just fine after the 8k. I go from my Naniwa 8k to either my Asagi or my vintage Thuringian. From there, it's just the leather strop and then shaving. When I visited Lynn's he was going from the 8k to a finisher (Naniwa 12k, escher, asagi, and probably another - though I'm not sure how he chooses which one to use on which razors) and then to .5 diamond on hard wool felt, English Bridle and shave. While I was there, I did 24 Dovo's on the 5, 8, 12, .05 diamond on hard wool felt, ED and shave - I think the edges were more keen, but I'd say they were sharper than I like. Well, maybe sharp or maybe harsh, or maybe my technique just doesn't have a light enough touch.
In short, yes, I love the edges from my Naniwa 8k to Asagi or Thurry.

Thanked: 198that is what i thought, but i guess i had to hear it from someone who hones more than i do to be sure. now to get my hand on some razors to practice with, oh well, i figured i had a rad problem, now i just have to put it to good use. thanks for the information. will let you know how things go when i actually get started, and by the way, i do believe it was your posts on the naniwas that sold me.

Well, I hope the Naniwa's work for you; I'd hate to think I steered someone in the wrong direction. I wish you luck with them, and feel free to get in touch if you need any help and none of the real experts are around.
