Thread: Coticule grit?

This has probably been asked before, if so please bear with me.

What is the grit on a belgian Coticule like these:

How do they finish an edge, compared to the Naniwa 12 K?

Coticules are basically 8000 grit, The Belgian Blue stone is around 4k. These stones are unique in the sense that when a slurry is raised, it releases more Garnets, increasing the stones ability to cut. Check this link. It has a list of hones and their grits.

The table gives you more info on Coticules, 10k, this is possible and subjective. It goes on to say, All Coticules are different. If you check Ardennes Coticule, (That's where they are mined) it'll tell you, 8k and 4k for the blue....in the very basic sense....I would trust the info at Ardennes.

Pink Coti's tend to cut faster, hence a lower grit, while your gold, yellow and green tend to be harder and slower, higher grit...

Coticules are awesome hones, great sharpeners if you are patient, and excellent finishes regardless. It is accepted they are around 8-10K, sometimes more.

They can act at the 1K level if a heavy slurry is used, and gradually diluted till just water to form an entire honing progression - the dilucot method.

Personally if I was to get another, order direct from Ardennes quarry.
