What kind of stroke were you doing? I have to agree with Sham... IME, a simple X stroke will help me get the entire edge in MOST cases. Trying to push the entire blade down the hone isn't a very effective way for me to hone...

    Do what Randy says.

BTW as far as your bevel widening at the heel, that means you are using enough pressure to flex the blade, that's why it's getting wider.

Thanks guys for the responses. Based on your advice I switched to a rolling X stroke which worked great. I guess my thinking was messed up. I was trying to get the whole edge to contact without rolling or extra pressure, but it was looking like this was going to take too much metal off the toe. Thanks also for the advice about the sandpaper... I will have to try that in the future.

With two pyramids and a little extra on the 8k I was able to easily pop arm hairs along the entire length of the blade. I wasn't able to pass a HHT, but that test seems a little fiddly to me.
