Default New hone: Maruichi Kiita Maruka Nakayama

I wanted to share a few photos of an incredible hone I recently purchased from So @ japan-tool.com. The photos include the stone with the kanji before lapping and photos after the stone was lapped with the kanji removed. It was sad to see the beautiful markings removed, but the hone was purchased to be used as a final finisher. I find that if I come off a 12,000 grit Naniwa and use a heavy slurry, the edge degrades slightly. As the slurry is diluted, the edge will come back to the edge that came off the 12,000 grit and as I continue to dilute the slurry the edge improves noticeably. As a final finisher, the stone works best with a few drops of water and I continue honing until the stone is dry. If I do my job correctly, I do not find the need to finish with CrOx as I did before.

Nice looking J-nat you got ther mate. Hope you get a lot of fun from using it.

The best thing about these stones is the experimentation phases. Would be great to hear what tricks she has up her sleeve!

    Enjoy!

How does it feel when you hone? Just interested. Am I correct that it is a fairly hard stone?

Thanks for the pics. Looks very good.

    Take Care,
    Richard

Richard, yes it is a very hard stone. It has a very smooth feel to it. When used with a light slurry, the feel is silky smooth. When I just dampen the stone without using a slurry for a final finish, the feel is still very smooth but without the silkiness. Without slurry, you feel and hear the hardness of the stone.
